Editing & Document Perfection
Professional Editing & Proofreading Services
Good writing can always be made better.
Whether you've written an important business report, prepared website content, completed a manuscript or simply have a document that doesn't sound quite right, I can help you improve it.
I'm Andrew, the writer and editor behind Document Perfection. With decades of professional experience across journalism, publishing, copywriting and business communications, I provide detailed editing and proofreading services for individuals, professionals and businesses throughout Australia.
My job is to make your writing clearer, more accurate, more readable and more effective, while preserving what you originally wanted to say.
Editing That Goes Beyond Spelling & Grammar
Professional editing is not just correcting mistakes.
A document can be technically accurate yet still be difficult to follow, unnecessarily complicated, repetitive or poorly structured. Sometimes the wording is awkward. Sometimes the tone doesn't suit the intended audience. And sometimes the message simply gets lost.
I look at how the entire document works, from individual sentences to the overall structure and flow.
Depending on what you need, I can correct errors, simplify complicated passages, improve sentence construction, remove unnecessary repetition and strengthen the way ideas are presented.
The aim isn't to make every document sound the same. It's to make your writing the best version of itself.
What Can I Edit or Proofread?
I work with a wide variety of documents, from short pieces of correspondence to substantial professional and creative projects.
Business and Professional Documents
Reports, proposals, presentations, company profiles, business plans, policies and professional correspondence all benefit from clear, accurate writing.
I can improve the structure, consistency and readability of these documents, helping ensure your ideas are communicated professionally and effectively.
Website Content and Marketing Copy
Your website is often a customer's first introduction to your business. Awkward wording, repetition or confusing explanations can undermine an otherwise strong impression.
I edit website pages, blog posts, advertisements, promotional materials, newsletters and other marketing content to improve clarity, tone, readability and persuasive impact.
Where appropriate, I can also consider SEO-related wording and content structure.
Books, Manuscripts and Creative Writing
Editing a manuscript requires sensitivity to the writer's voice, intentions and style.
Whether you're working on a novel, memoir, non-fiction book or other creative project, I can help improve sentence construction, consistency, readability and the overall presentation of your writing.
For manuscripts requiring more substantial development, we can discuss the appropriate level of editorial support before work begins.
Personal and Important Documents
Some of the most important things we write aren't intended for publication.
Personal statements, letters, applications, speeches, biographies and other significant documents deserve the same care and attention as professional publications.
I can help make sure your words accurately express what you mean, in a tone appropriate to the situation.
Proofreading, Copy Editing and Structural Editing
Not every document needs the same level of attention. Understanding the difference can help you choose the right service.
Proofreading
Proofreading is the final check before a document is submitted, published or shared.
I look for spelling mistakes, grammar and punctuation errors, typographical problems, inconsistent formatting and other small issues that can detract from an otherwise finished piece.
This is particularly useful when you're satisfied with the content and structure but want reassurance that the final version is clean and professional.
Copy Editing
Copy editing goes deeper than proofreading.
Alongside correcting errors, I examine sentence construction, word choice, clarity, consistency and readability. I can reduce repetition, improve transitions and refine passages that sound awkward or unnecessarily complicated.
The result should read more smoothly without losing your individual voice or intended meaning.
Structural and Substantive Editing
Sometimes the main problem isn't individual sentences but the way a document is organised.
Structural editing considers the bigger picture: whether ideas appear in a logical order, whether sections connect effectively, whether information is repeated and whether the overall document achieves its intended purpose.
This level of editing is especially valuable for longer reports, manuscripts, business documents and complex written projects.
Keeping Your Voice While Improving Your Writing
One of the most important parts of good editing is knowing what not to change.
A document shouldn't automatically lose its personality simply because it has been professionally edited.
Some clients want a formal, authoritative style. Others need writing that feels natural, conversational or personal. Creative writers may have a distinctive voice they want carefully preserved.
I pay attention to the purpose of the document, its intended readership and the style you want to maintain.
My approach is to improve the writing without unnecessarily replacing your voice with mine.
Where more substantial changes are appropriate, I can discuss the reasoning behind them and work towards a result that feels right to you.
Editing AI-Generated and AI-Assisted Content
Artificial intelligence has made it easier than ever to produce large amounts of text. Unfortunately, producing text and producing good writing aren't the same thing.
AI-generated drafts can contain awkward phrasing, repetitive explanations, overly formal language, inconsistent tone and statements that require careful verification.
I can help refine this material into clearer, more natural and more purposeful writing.
As an experienced professional writer who also works extensively with advanced AI systems and editorial tools, I understand the strengths and limitations of machine-generated content.
My editing focuses on improving the substance and quality of the writing, not simply changing words to make the text appear different.
For more specialised assistance with AI-generated material, advanced detection tools and authenticity concerns, see my dedicated AI Writing, Refinement & Navigation service.
The Benefits of Working With an Experienced Editor
Editing software can detect certain problems, and modern AI tools can suggest improvements. Both can be useful.
But neither reliably replaces an experienced editor's understanding of context, tone, meaning and audience.
An automated suggestion might be grammatically correct but stylistically inappropriate. It might remove an important qualification, oversimplify a technical point or change what the writer intended to communicate.
Professional editing involves judgement.
My background spans decades of writing and editorial work across journalism, publishing, business communications and digital content. I also hold degrees in psychology and education, previously majored in philosophy and am currently undertaking Psychology Honours studies.
This combination of professional and academic experience informs my approach to research, analysis, language and communication.
I use modern tools where they add value, but every editing project benefits from my personal attention and editorial judgement.
How My Editing Service Works
The process is straightforward and tailored to the document.
First, you tell me what you've written, what it's for and what kind of help you need. If you're unsure whether proofreading or more detailed editing is appropriate, I can help you determine that.
I'll consider the document's length, complexity, condition, intended audience and deadline before providing a quote.
Once we agree on the scope of work, I'll review the material carefully and make the appropriate improvements.
Depending on the project, changes can be made using Microsoft Word's Track Changes feature, allowing you to see what's been adjusted, or I can provide a clean edited version.
I understand that some documents contain confidential, commercially sensitive or personal information, and I treat client material with discretion.
My aim is to make the process straightforward, efficient and useful, whether you're working on a short document or a larger project.
Editing or Complete Rewriting?
There's an important difference between improving a document and rebuilding it.
If your writing is reasonably complete and the overall content is sound, proofreading or editing may be all that's required.
If the document is severely disorganised, incomplete, inconsistent or fundamentally unsuitable for its purpose, a more extensive rewrite might be the better option.
That's where my separate Document Rescue & Rewriting service comes in.
I'm happy to discuss both possibilities and recommend the approach that makes the most sense for your particular document.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between editing and proofreading?
Proofreading focuses on correcting final errors such as spelling, grammar, punctuation and formatting inconsistencies. Editing can involve more substantial changes to wording, sentence structure, clarity, consistency and overall organisation.
Can you edit a document without changing my writing style?
Yes. Preserving your intended voice is an important part of my approach. I tailor edits to the document's purpose and your preferences, rather than imposing a standard writing style.
Do you edit documents written using ChatGPT or other AI tools?
Yes. I can improve the clarity, accuracy, structure and readability of AI-assisted writing, including addressing awkward or repetitive language. I can also advise on authenticity concerns, although no particular AI detection result can be guaranteed.
Can you edit longer documents or book manuscripts?
Yes. I'm happy to discuss substantial editing projects, including reports, books and manuscripts. The level of editing, timeframe and cost will depend on the material and the work required.
How much does professional editing cost?
Pricing depends on document length, complexity, quality of the original writing and the level of editing required. A final proofread of a polished document will generally require less work than detailed copy editing or structural revision.
I provide individual quotes so the price reflects the actual project.
Can you work to a tight deadline?
Where my schedule allows, yes. Let me know your deadline when making an enquiry, and I'll tell you whether I can accommodate it.
